Our journey traces back to the 1900s, when traders from the Middle East arrived in Singapore and made their home in the Kampong Glam area, particularly around Arab Street and North Bridge Road.
Among these early settlers was the Alsagoff family, one of the most prominent Arab families in Singapore’s early history. They built many stately homes in the area—several of which have been preserved to this day. If you walk along Jalan Sultan, you’ll find two such historic landmarks: Wisma Alsagoff and the Alsagoff Arab School, standing as enduring symbols of the family's legacy.
During this era, M. Abdul Rahiman served as the Master Chef for the Alsagoff family. Renowned for his culinary skills, he prepared countless memorable dishes, but none more cherished than his Beryani—a flavorful dish of Turkish-Indian origin, where saffron rice is cooked with seasoned meats and aromatic herbs in large copper pots.
This exquisite dish became a staple at the Alsagoff household, delighting not only family members but also esteemed guests, including British Governors and dignitaries, who were often invited to dine with them. The Beryani earned widespread praise and quickly became a symbol of hospitality and heritage.
During the Japanese Occupation, M. Abdul Rahiman’s compassion shone through. Moved by the hardship and hunger around him, he cooked large quantities of food daily to feed the poor and homeless in the neighborhood—an act of generosity that would go on to define his legacy.
Inspired by his experiences and the overwhelming response to his food, M. Abdul Rahiman founded the first Islamic Restaurant in 1921 on North Bridge Road. The restaurant became known for its signature Beryani—once reserved for nobility, now made accessible to all.
Word spread quickly. Patrons who once tasted his food in the Alsagoff residence returned, bringing friends and family. Over the decades, the restaurant flourished, drawing everyone from everyday Singaporeans to notable figures, all united by a love for that same unforgettable dish.”
Over the decades, Islamic Restaurant has been graced by a distinguished list of patrons. Among them were Singapore’s first President, the late Encik Yusof Ishak, former President S.R. Nathan, and the nation’s first Chief Justice, Wee Chong Jin. Many Members of Parliament, prominent lawyers, and respected medical professionals have also been loyal supporters over the years.
On occasion, you may even witness state limousines pulling up to collect our renowned fare—dishes truly worthy of royalty. Our signature Beryani has delighted the palates of esteemed dignitaries including the Sultan of Brunei, the Sultan of Johor (Current King of Malaysia), the Sultan of Perak, the Sultan of Perlis, and Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Najib Razak. More recently, we’ve had the honor of serving former President Halimah Yacob and current President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Truly, this is a meal fit for a king.
At the heart of this legacy lies a closely guarded treasure—our authentic Beryani recipe, passed down through generations with care and pride. This culinary tradition continues today under the leadership of the founder’s dynamic grandson, Mr. Kalil.
Under his stewardship, Islamic Restaurant has evolved far beyond its humble beginnings. It now encompasses a Catering Division, Dial-a-Beryani (home delivery) service, a Breakfast Beryani concept, a Fine Dining Restaurant, and even a Cooking Academy, where both adults and children can learn to master a variety of cuisines.
More than a century later, the spirit of our founder lives on in every dish we serve. It is our pleasure and honor to continue sharing the warmth, heritage, and richness of authentic halal cuisine with you.”
